People and Wellbeing

Why does the wellbeing of my team matter?

Feelings of wellbeing are fundamental to the overall physical and mental health of an individual, enabling them to successfully overcome difficulties at home and work to achieve life goals. When people  experience feelings of stress and worry, it can cause sleepless nights, which can lead to poor performance at work and relationships with colleagues. Ultimately, this can also lead to greater levels of absenteeism in the workplace which then places extra stress on other staff which creates a cascade effect. Good mental health is characterised by a person's ability to fulfil a number of key functions and activities, including: the ability to learn. the ability to feel, express and manage a range of positive and negative emotions. This can be attributed to any level in an organisation.

How can I support my team?

It will come as no surprise that a team member who feels like a they are part of a family of community are more likely to stay productive, engaged and long term commit their career to an organisation. This is what most applicants are looking for in a new role. The culture of the team has a direct impact on the performance  and importantly the wellbeing of any individual.

A wellbeing strategy has the potential to bring huge benefits to everyone however they need to be introduced properly to be effective, consistent with your business values and culture to be successful. This means supportive leadership behaviours, safety for each person to voice their concerns even if they are in a minority of one and an open culture that allows for employees to shape the working community.
